This week-end we stayed at the Bykenhulle House Bed and Breakfast in Hopewell Junction. Great place to stay. Enjoyed morning conversations with Bill Beausoleil about Computer History (Bill is the host at Bykenhulle House).
Walked miles on various trails around Hyde Park. There are great Maps and Audio Podcasts available.
The slide show is from a guided walk on Roosevelt Woods Trail (3.3 mile round trip). The trail starts at FDR Presidential Home, Springwood. A few shots of the Bykenhulle House are included.

This weekend we visited Gettysburg, PA. and stayed at one of our favorite B and Bs - the Gaslight Inn. A new restaurant was opening - One Lincoln (btw - excellent dinner) and we had the honor of meeting Abe Lincoln (actually, Jim Getty a well known Lincoln actor and historian).

We had a great discussion about Abe Lincoln's visit to Albany, NY on February 18th, 1861. Jim Getty knew all about the visit. We also discussed a well known actor who was performing in Albany at the time. Even though Mr. Lincoln was a BIG fan of the theater, he was just too busy to see the play. However, Abe/Jim Getty noted that he had heard that the actor was injured by an accident with a dagger. I told Mr. Lincoln (incorrectly) that a jealous girl friend caused the wound.

I wasn't totally wrong. It seems that the infamous actor visited Albany, NY on several occasions from February until April in 1861, and he was wounded twice! The 1st time was February 12th, a few days before Mr. Lincoln was there; and the 2nd (when a jealous girlfriend stabbed him) was a few months later.

See John Wilkes Booth performing in an Albany theater!
- "...After his performance in Evadne, after the actors returned to the Stanwix Hotel to unwind and drink, Booth got into a fight with his then-girlfriend, actress Henrietta Irving, who claimed that Booth had promised to marry her – and then abruptly changed his mind. Irving lunged at Booth with a knife; Booth parried the knife away, but the glancing stab lacerated Booth’s cheek. That night, thinking that she had murdered her lover, Henrietta Irving would later stab herself in a failed suicide attempt. During his time in Albany, John Wilkes Booth almost stabbed himself in one performance, and was almost knifed after a second. Albany was obviously not a safe place for him, and he never performed in the Capital District again ...".Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7624640399508882601.post-7563584597173074672013-03-23T18:43:00.000-04:002013-03-31T18:48:41.673-04:0003-23-2013 Gettysburg, Walking Union Lines

Had a great walk at Gettysburg National Military Park. The walk covers 1/2 of the Union Lines as they existed on the third day of the battle.

Start at the visitor center, exit by the back patio and take the path to Meade's Headquarters. Cross Taneytown Road and walk up to Cemetery Ridge. Turn south on Hancock Ave., walk along the ridge toward the Pennsylvania Memorial. The field that Pickett's Charge crossed is on your right. The Confederate High water mark is also on your left at the corpse of trees. Little Round top will be noticable as you pass the Pennsylvania Memorial. While the climb is small from this end the view is quite spectacular. The best way back (unless you want to double the distance and walk the Confederate Lines) is to return.

On the way back there was a small brush fire at Wiekert House and I stopped an helped the Ranger extinguish it. Nothing like a little excitement during a pleasant walk.
Stockbridge Massachusetts is a great place to park and walk. This walk starts at the town hall (where you can park). The trail head is hidden at the rear of the parking lot. The trail is maintained by the nation's oldest village improvement society, The Laurel Hill Association is (founded in 1853). After a few hundred yards, you come to a grove with a rostrum. At the far end of the grove the path continues along the slope of Laural Hill and eventually comes to the trail head parking lot on Park Street. Space is limited here, and imo far better parking behind the town hall.

The trail is well marked and there is a magnificent suspension bridge over the Housatonic River. After about 1/2 mile the trail divides with the left fork going to the Ice Glen and the left fork climbing 600 feet to Laura's Tower (constructed in 1931). The right fork leads to the Ice Glen. Some earlier Ice Glen hikers included: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Herman Melville, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and William Cullen Bryant.

There is a bit of rock climbing involved to cross the Ice Glen. On the other side you can follow a dirt road to Ice Glen Road and loop back to Stockbridge.

After the walk stop by the Red Lion Inn or Alice's Restaurant for lunch.
I ruptured a tendon and I've been hobbling along instead of walking. Also adding a few pounds. I still manage to log a few miles: June 85; July 57; August 50 and in September 56 miles. Total mileage as of September, 2012 was 3,184.

In May we vacationed in Western Virgina and walked several Civil War Battlefields, including: Harper's Ferry, Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, New Market and Appomattox. In June we took a trin trip to North Creek, stayed overnight and walked around the town. In July we explored Schdack Island and Merck Farm, in Vermont. During August we walked to breakfast breakfast at the Saratoga Track.

In September we vacationed in the Berkshires and walked up and down on Mount Greylock, explored the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, and walked a few loops around Stockbridge (Naumkeag, Ice Glen).
There are several walks at the Antietam. Before you start walking I highly recommend that you check the visitor center for the guided ranger tours.

This battle was one of the first in history that was extensively photographed. I've included a few in the slide show (National Park Site that details Historic Photographs by Alexander Gardner).

The walk that I detailed includes the Mumma Farm, the Cornfield and Bloody Lane. The battle took place on a broad front. A major portion of the battle was covered by this walk. The other area (a short drive away) took place at the Burnside Bridge.

This is a relatively short walk that starts at the Manassas Henry Hill Visitor Center. Before you start walking I highly recommend that you check the visitor center for the guided ranger tours.

There were two distinct battles that occurred here that were separated by 14 months. The guided tour of the 1st Manassas helps puts the Civil War in context. Basically, 1st Manassas was the first large scale battle of the Civil War. Instead of a battle of trained armies, this was a battle of amateurs. As I listened to the guide I got the mental picture of high school football teams and marching bands shooting at one another. There were very few trained leaders, and even fewer trained and EFFECTIVE leaders. General Thomas Jackson, hereafter called Stonewall, was one notable exception.

Do not go on a guided tour of the 2nd Battle without listening to the 1st. The South seemed to learn quicker than the North. In large part this was the result of excellent leadership. Especially when contrasted with Union commanders like General Pope. However (in my opinion) at all levels, the southern units were more experienced. And they had the home court advantage. Simply put, because the South had fewer resources, southern Units fought more often. Following the disaster of the 1st Bull Run many union soldiers were mustered out of service. They were replaced with new (untrained) units. Also, union soldiers, recruited from the eastern cities were at a disadvantage compared to confederate soldiers and union soldiers recruited from the west. Basic marksmanship skills and other wilderness related skills had to be learned by eastern recruits. Green Union units from the west like the Wisconsin Iron Brigade entered combat with certain advantages.
This is a three and a half mile walk that starts at the Gettysburg Visitor Center. The route starts at a trail behind the visitor center. This short trail ends at a crosswalk across Taneytown Road. Head north on the sidewalk along Taneytown Road and loop through the National Cemetery. Then recross Taneytown Road and head past the old visitor center to Cemetery Ridge. Head south along Cemetery Ridge toward the Pennsylvania Memorial and loop back to the visitor center via General Meade's Headquarters.

Before you start walking check the visitor center for the guided ranger tours. We managed to combine this walk with two great guided tours:

THE THIRD DAY: "Pickett's Charge" (1 hour) Learn what happened during "Pickett's Charge" on July 3, 1863 and discover what its outcome meant for the Union and Confederacy.

NATIONAL CEMETERY (40 minutes) A 35-minute program that explores the meaning and cost of the Battle of Gettysburg, and of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

When we toured the National Cemetery we managed to hear a recital of the Gettysburg Address by a visiting school group. Wonderful experience!

A short warning about straying from the beaten path - I often walk in Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, NY. There are a few graves there from veterans of the NY 125th Regiment including Colonel Willard who was killed at Gettysburg. I tried to find Col. Willard's memorial by Plum Run (Creek) and I found myself covered with deer ticks.
Recently I ruptured a tendon and I've been hobbling along instead of walking. Also adding a few pounds. I still manage to log a few miles: March 103; April 124; and in May only 75 miles. Total mileage as of May 31st, 2012 was 2,940.

In May we vacationed in Western Virgina and walked several Cival War Battlefields, including: Harper's Ferry, Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, New Market and Appomattox. All of these battlefields have walking paths with signage and monuments. Most offer ranger guided walking tours of relatively short distance. Walking a civil war battlefield, listening to a qualified guide is a vastly different experience than a drive by with a few quick stops. During the next few months I hope to outline a few of these walks on this blog.

We also explored the Hundred Acre Wood Trail System near the new Global Foundries Facility in Malta, NY. We're waiting to see how this system connects to the Zim Smith Trail. And we've been walking around Saratoga Springs and North Creek.
This winter, because of a lack of snow, I had to reach into my archive of unpublished walks. In December I wrote about Cooperstown and in January about Glimerglass State Park. In the same general area is Cherry Vallye.

Last July on the waay to Glimmerglass State Park we stopped at Chery Valley, visited the museum and took aa quick (less than a mile loop) around the town.
Since I started logging my walks 20 months ago (April 2010), I logged 2,6380 Miles. Work trumped walking, compensated by walking close to home. Very Little snow, weather unseasonably warm. Managed to walk outside quite a bit for the winter.

My walks during the month included:

Oakwood Cemetery Loop (5.6 - 6.8 miles), 3 times

Neighborhood walks (1.7 - 4.2 miles), 23 times

Since I started logging my walks 19 months ago (April 2010), I logged 2,520 Miles.

I got sick during the month and it was difficult getting to my hundred mile goal. Luckily the weather was very warm and very clear. I had plently of opportunity to log miles at the end of the month. During January it did snow but it didn't last. I managed snowshoe twice.
Since I started logging my walks 18 months ago (April 2010), I logged 2,417 Miles. Because of winter weather we got our "Walk-Away the Pounds Videos." We like the 2 mile walk that takes 1/2 hour. It's a great alternative when it gets nasty outside. Another alternative is mall walking (one lap at Cross Gates is a Mile). I also parked at Metroland Dinner, ate breakfast and walked to Cross Gates Mall to do my Christmas Shopping.

This was the last day of 2011 that the USS Slater is open for tours. Every year, after thanksgiving the ship moves to the east bank of the Hudson River. It will return in the spring. This is largely dictated by ice conditions on the west bank.

Today, I decided to walk across the Dunn Memorial Bridge and check out the Rensselaer side. The biggest attraction on this side of the river is the Train Station. Until the 1960s the main train station was on the Albany Side. Trains crossed from the Rensselaer side to Albany on the Main Lane Bridge that was demolished when Route 787 was constructed.

This is basically a short walk, and it's a neat way to get to the USS Slater, take a train from NY City. Nice views, but one has to be careful of the traffic. While the traffic is a little distracting on the bridge, there is delineated pedestrian walkway. But it's a little tough crossing the city streets in Rensselaer.

Just south of the bridge is the Albany Yacht Club. This is another neat way to visit the USS Slater, sail a boat up the Hudson.
Deerfield, Mass is beautiful little walk and it's a great drive getting there.

We do this excursion a once or twice a year. Typical route is a loop from Albany Area via the Mass Pike (Route 90), to Route 91 North. Then a visit to the Yankee Candle Flagship Store. About ten miles north of Yankee Candle, on Route 5 & 10 you come to Historic Deerfield. In the center of the village you can purchase a tag that will give you admission to the historic sites and museums in the village. After the visit we continue north on Route 5 & 10 to Route 2 (Mohawk Trail). This is a very scenic drive that goes through Williamstown, North Adams and the Petersburg Pass.

This fall, Hurricane Irene caused substantial damage and the Historic Deerfield Inn and the Mohawk Trail were closed.

The Flynt Center in Deerfield has a great collection of 18th-19th Century Artifacts and Antiques. I was very impressed with the collection of powder horns from the French and Indian War. Many of these horns were used during the Battle of Lake George. My Lake George walk passes many of the places where these horns were used.
This is really two walks connected by a ferry ride. The 1st route is a short loop around Southport, NC (1.3 Miles). The 2nd is a short loop around Fort Fisher Historic site, NC (1.4 Miles). The two loops are connected by a short ferry ride. The Southport - Fort Fisher Ferry ride is a great, low cost trip ($5 one-way per car as of September, 2011).
Southport North Carolina is a historic town located at the mouth of the Cape Fear River at the intersection of the Atlantic Ocean. The short walk features historic homes, huge live oaks, antique shops, art galleries, activities, parks and restaurants. The ferry is a few miles outside of the town.
Fort Fisher is located on the north shore of the Cape Fear River outlet (opposite of Southport). Today, only about 10% of the original Fort Remains. The walk is the combination of two separate loops starting from the parking lot at the Fort Fisher Visitor Center. The 1st loop is basically the guided tour (no cost) that starts from the visitor center. The 2nd loop is a short loop across the highway on a walkway along the revetment.

I was familiar with the battle because I often walk in Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, NY. Oakwood is the final resting place of many Union Veterans of the Battle including William Freeman (Medal of Honor Recipient) and General Alanzo Alden.

The fall of Fort Fisher was one of the major battles of 1865. After the fall of Charleston, Wilmington, NC was the last port open to the Confederates. Fort Fisher was the key to closing the port. In January of 1865 the Fort was captured by Union Forces (after the 2nd attempt). Three months later the Civil War Ended. After the Civil war there were several controversies concerning the capture (on both the Union and Confederate side).
Since I started logging my walks 16 months ago (April 2010), I logged 2,106 Miles.

During September my wife and I vacationed in Myrtle Beach. I profiled a pair of walks to Southport, NC and Fort Fisher. The two walks are connected by a short ferry ride across the Fear River (at $5 a great bargain). We also visited Brookgreen Gardens which I profiled last year. And I managed to get a few great beach walks in North Myrtle Beach (also profiled in previous entries).

My walks during the month included:

Oakwood Cemetery Loop (4.6 - 5.7 miles), 6 times

Neighborhood walks (1.7 - 5.7 miles), 10 times

Voorhesville (5.6 miles), 1 time

Beach walks at Myrtle Beach (3.6 - 12.1 miles), 6 times

Local walk at Myrtle Beach (1.7 - 3.9 miles), 11 times

Fort Fisher, NC (1.4 miles), 1 time

Southport, NC (1.4 miles), 1 time

Since I started logging my walks 15 months ago (April 2010), I logged 1,973 Miles.

On August 31st I took the Empire State Capital Volkssporters (facebook) on a 10K through Oakwood Cemetery in Troy NY. Based on feedback I think everyone had a great time. Some walkers questioned my mileage (in good fun, they thought they should get credit for more than 10k). I used a geo-logger on my android phone to compute the distance, and it was just slightly over 6 miles.

Oakwood is one of my favorite walks. It's a very beautiful and historic place. Throughout the year there are guide tours available. On September 24, Mike Barrett (who gives a GREAT tour) will be leading an excursion that will include the Earl Chapel’s Tiffany windows, Uncle Sam’s grave, and a 100 mile view, as well as ponds, waterfalls, striking gravesite markers and more. To register please call 800-556-6273.
On the morning (9:00 AM) of August 31th, 2011 I will be leading the Empire State Capital Volkssporter Club on a guided walk there. The sign-in is at the parking lot of Ross Valve Tech Park on a 102nd Street.

The full walk is 6 miles in length and involves a climb of 345'. However, some ESCV members will drive to the top, and join the group near the crest of the hill. This will cut the climb to a 100'. The route snakes through the cemetery and there are numerous opportunities to take cut-offs. The length for the group the drives to the top is approximately 4 miles (but there are cutoffs that make the route shorter).

Regarding Volksport Special events - the Cemetery and the Gardner Earl Memorial Chapel and Crematorium are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There route will pass five lakes; two water falls (if there is sufficient flow) ; one outdoor bell; and the site of the Major League Ball park for the Troy Haymakers (the San Francisco Giants). There are also numerous veteran memorials including the General Wool Memorial and the General Thomas Memorial (Nine Civil War Generals, A Medal of Honor Recipient, A crewman from the USS Monitor).

If you're familiar with Goggle Earth I uploaded a KMZ file of the route. You can also view the route on Map My Walk at this link. During the winter I posted a similar route to everytrail.com.

Since I started logging my walks 14 months ago (April 2010), I logged 1,859 Miles. We re-visited earlier walks on the Zim Smith and Lake George Bike Paths. Also started exploring walks in and around Cooperstown and Cohoes/Waterford. On the 4th, instead of driving to the local fireworks display I walked (just short of 8 miles).

Walks included:

Oakwood Cemetery Loop (4.6 - 5.8 miles), 2 times

Neighborhood walk (1.7 - 4.4 miles), 30 times

Neighborhood walk to Fireworks (7.8 miles), 1 time

USS Slater - Albany Loop (3.5-4.5 miles), 2 times

Vooresville Loop (4.7-5.4 miles), 2 times

Cohoes (2-5.5 mile), 4 times

Zim Smith (5.4 mile), 1 time

Lake George (9.3 miles), 2 times

Cooperstown (1.7-3.0 miles), 2 times

The loop can start at numerous interesting sites: Peebles Island; Waterford Battery or along Delaware Avenue. On a summer week-end there is a fee for parking at Peebles Island State Park.

On the east side of Van Schaick Island and on Peebles Island there are walking paths. On the Waterford side there is a path along the Old Champlain Canal. However, to get from Waterford to Cohoes you have to cross the route 32 bridge with heavy traffic (there is a sidewalk). Once you are on the Cohoes side you are at an extremely busy intersection. There are traffic lights and crosswalks. To connect back to the paths on Van Schaick Island you have to walk on Ontario Street which is well traveled but it is lined with sidewalks.

At a minimum you will have to cross seven bridges. There are opportunties to cross more. The Hudson River divides into multiple channels. There are three crossings. You will also cross the Mohawk River twice, and the Erie and Champlain Canals.

On Van Schaick Island there is the historic Van Schaick House (~1735). Appointments are necessary to visit this site. On the Waterford Side there is the historic Hugh White House (1830). Visiting hours are limited, you should check the schedule.

There are quite a few variations and side trips. Some of the photos in the slideshow detail sites that are a short distance from the loop. The 2nd highest water fall in NY is in Cohoes, but you can't see it from this loop. To get an excellent view, you have to take a 2 mile extension to visit the Fall View Park. However, there are fine parking opportunities at the Falls View Park and it's an easy drive.

There is very little elevation change on the basic loop. If you take the extension to Falls View Park, there is approximately a 100 ft. gain in elevation. At the Falls View Park you have the opportunity to take stairs down to the river bank. This will add another 100 ft. climb.
